Updates from 5A

Fractions

In math we have been using IXL and other resources to practice our adding and subtracting fractions skill. So far we have subtracted mixed numbers and borrowed while subtracting just like with decimals. Everyone has at least gotten a 3 or more in the subject for math data. Ms. Armstrong thinks that going on IXL and practicing this skill will help us get better at this skill. I think IXL is helping me get better at this skill. To add or subtract fractions, you look at the denominator and try to match up the two denominators by multiplying the two until they have a match. After you match the denominators and multiply the two numerators by the same amount as the denominator. Then add both of the numerators together and there is your answer. In some of the sections in IXL Fifth Grade adding and subtracting mixed numbers, it has you simplify your answer to get the smallest fraction possible.

CONSTELLATION

Constellations are when stars in the sky form pictures like Orion the hunter and Aquarius the water catcher. Also they are called zodiac. Zodiac are your birthday constellations mine is Aquarius the water catcher. And I do not know when Payton’s is but I can find out when I have the time. Some constellations you can only see half of like taurus you can only see his head and shoulders. Cepheus you can only see him in october at 9:00pm. Polaris you can see by the North Pole it is on the little dipper. The stars in cepheus make a house but he was a king. There is also a constellation called cancer (cancer is latin for crab).

Assembly

So us fifth graders and one 4th grade class did a assembly and this time it was a don't interrupt song. We had to practice it and each class had their own part. Then in the morning we went into the gym and everybody else in the whole school were watching us. Are class 5A got the second part in the song .but there was one part in the song were all of us had to sing because it was the responsible part which was the main part. Then the song was over but each month we have a different assembly for the 5th graders and it is usually a song . And we all had 1 day to practice are part and all the 5th grade (5L,5C,4C) classes came in are room and one 4th grade class too.

Buddies

We have grouped up with kindergarten buddies in two classes,we have reading buddies in KT and in SSM. In SSM we made scarecrow hands made of popcorn and candy corn at the tips and we acted out a book named The little old lady who wasn’t afraid of anything. We had a great time there and they did too. We have gone to KT a few times. Our last time there we wrote what we were thankful for,Another time we made cute little pumpkins that were all unique in their own way just like the book The square pumpkin That we read.Our buddies have became very close and are always excited to see us and we are always excited to see them. We like to come to their classes and read to them or even sometimes them read to us.We can’t wait to see our buddies again!!!

Thanksgiving

Thanksgiving is coming up. We get out on wednesday at 2:30 for thanksgiving. We are thankful for having good friends, for having this awesome school, for getting these speakers and field trips and awesome teachers!

Our biographies are about astronauts

We got to do A biography on astronauts the one I chose myself was Yuri gagarin, the first man in space. He died by crashing into the wall of russia. And his ashes burned with him. His mom always said “shoot for the stars.” And his dad never would believe him and help him in things but just as days went on Yuri had never been a person that helps others, just caring about himself. But on his mother and father's death he promises to his mom to make her proud of him.

Tchoukball

In P.E. we have been doing a game called tchoukball! you have a ball like looks like an eclipse ball and you have 4 or 5 on a team you have to pick someone to guard but you can, not intercept or knock it down so you are thinking why are you guarding someone if you can’t steal or block well here is your answer! if he goes and tries to score on the tchouk ball net if you are guarding them then you can catch it when it comes off the net and they won’t get a point if the same team catches it the opposite team gets a point and if a different partner catches it the person that throws it there team gets a point.

Musical

In music we are doing a play and it is called heros all. We have to sing songs like “Jesse” and “heros all” and “go nellie go”. We have parts where we are going to be saying during the song like for an example: “Moms and Dads grandmas grandpas’’. The play is mostly about african american heros. Sometimes our music can get confusing. The harmony parts are tricky. In our plays we stand on risers I think so everybody can see. Eventually, we’ll learn the choreography or dance moves to fit the musical.

Simulation

This week we have been doing a simulation in class. We made it seem like we were on the mayflower but we have customize our own mayflower/tribe. We have to try to beat the real pilgrims and their progress. This simulation is cruel and a sad life. “people die” and “get sick”. We try to live in america with indians trying to wipe us OUT. To us 5th graders we think it is SUPER FUN and we enjoy it. When it comes time to do the simula Miss. Armstrong reads us something about that part of the time and then we have to write about that time like we were there and then we do an activity about it and the activity is super fun.
